This is a guest posting by my mother who went to Venice Beach, Florida for a quick vacation.
Venice Beach, Florida
February 10, it is 25º (F) in Ohio. This same time last week in Venice, Florida it was 84º. My cousin, MaryAnn, and I walked on Venice Beach. Many were out on the beach that day but I was surprised, for an unseasonably warm day for even mid Florida, Gulfside, that there weren’t more people. Is it possible to want to move to a warmer climate and then take it for granted?
I’ve had my experience with North East coast ankle freezing surf and so enjoyed the relatively “warm” Gulf waves. We walked in the surf and I was hit to my waist with a rogue wave. And, though cool, I wasn’t shivery. The wind was brisk that day with sand stinging the legs and face at times. But overall a beautiful beach and beautiful day.
We headed for Sharky’s on the beach for lunch expecting the usual 1 hour wait. When the hostess said 20-25 minutes we felt lucky and walked out on the pier to wait. I don’t think we were out there even 10 minutes when we were called to a table.
MaryAnn and I couldn’t resist one catch of the day – grouper. Fresh fish choices come with choice of deep fried, broiled, baked or pan fried. Fresh green beans and redskin potatoes finished the meal.
The next day we walked Old Venice and enjoyed the many shops and outdoor restaurants. It was another beautiful 80 degree day. I have been to Venice, Italy, and the outdoor Trattorias and menus are reminiscent of that canal city.
There is so much more to see and do in the area but I was visiting only 4 days. It is a short 2 hour nonstop flight from Ohio to Punta Gorda. Then 40 minutes to Venice. Allegiant Air ticket round trip – $96. Try Venice Beach for your next quick vacation.
