Places to Stay in Newport Rhode Island

I recently had a question sent to me from my beach pictures at Flickr, asking where the best place to stay on the beach is in Newport, Rhode Island. Well, I feel like I am qualified to answer that since I practically grew up in Newport. My dad is from there, so I spent the summers out there as a kid. My wife and I still try to get out there as much as we can. So the question was that she is going to Newport next month, and wanted to know a good place to stay, on the beach.

Here’s what I said:

There’s a few places you can stay at. One really nice place is the Cliff Side Inn. It’s right on Cliff Walk which goes behind all the backyards of the Newport Mansions. It’s also right on the end of 1st beach (Easton’s Beach). I’m pretty sure it’s going to cost more than your average hotel, but it’s a really nice place to stay.

Another place is Johnny’s Atlantic Beach Club. They have a really great (somewhat expensive) restaurant with live music there. It’s at the other end of 1st beach that the Cliff Side Inn. It’s right on the beach. It’s also across the street from Flo’s Clam Shack, a great place for seafood. You also have the Newport Inn, which is right across the road from the beach, next to Flo’s.

Everything is within walking distance of all these places, the mansions, the beach and great food. One place I would definitely recommend is Anthony’s Seafood. My wife and I go there everytime we’re in RI, and we always get some to take home too. It’s also a seafood market. You can’t beat the prices or the food.

One thing to remember is that Newport and Middletown are so close together, that you really can’t tell where one ends and the other begins. So when I say that somethings in Newport, the address may say Middletown. Don’t let that scare you. There are two main beaches on the island. 1st beach and, obviously, 2nd beach. Although the actual names are Easton’s Beach and Sachuest Point Beach. 1st is on the left, and 2nd is on the right.

They are within about a mile of each other. There’s also a 3rd beach by 2nd beach, but it’s a lot more calm, good for the kids. There are a couple more beaches such as Sandy Point ( we went there as kids a lot). Sandy Point is a cross between a river and the ocean and has almost no waves. There is so much to do in Newport, I can’t really list it all here. But I can answer questions if you have any. Vivian, I am working on posting what I did in Newport, but I haven’t finished yet. You need to go to Anthony’s Seafood on Aquidneck Ave. They have the best seafood for the best prices anywhere. I have mentioned them in a previous post.

If you have never been to Newport, you should make Ocean Drive a priority. You can drive down Bellevue Ave, where all the mansions are, and then drive right around the ocean through Brenton Point State Park.

It’s a beautiful drive. You get to see the New England architecture, the countryside, the mansions, the ocean. Just about everything you would like to see.

    Ben
