Eating a Mango. Wishing for Jamaica and the Beach.

Just sitting here eating a mango, thinking about the beach and Jamaica. I’m also listening to “Underneath the Mango Tree” from Dr. No. Yeah, I’m also a big James Bond fan. The fruit in the Caribbean is something else. This mango is good, but if you eat one in Jamaica, you wouldn’t be able to eat one from the states for a long time. I remember ten years ago when I went to Jamaica, I had some pineapple. I had never had pineapple where you could eat the rind, and that the rind was still better than the pineapple you get here. When I got home to the states, the next time I had pineapple was a few months later in boot camp. I almost choked on it. Nothing compares to fresh fruit from where it is supposed to grow.

Too bad the restrictions on bringing fruit back from overseas is so tough. It can be done, but there are a lot of things that you need to do first. When I came back from Jamaica, I wasn’t allowed to bring the sugarcane I had into the country because it wasn’t cut up properly. To bring back pineapple, it had to be washed to get every little speck of stuff out of the cracks. They would inspect it too. If it had any type of mold or parasite, no matter how little, you couldn’t bring it in. They are very tough.

If you enjoy fresh fruit (and are not afraid of being attacked by someone holding fresh fruit) then you need to go to the Caribbean. I personally would say Jamaica, but that’s just my opinion.

Did you know that most of the fruit and the sugarcane grown in Jamaica is not native to the island? It was brought over from the Orient.

True, but it is all equated with the Caribbean. Plus, everything is better in Jamaica. Like allspice, although brought from Spain by Christopher Columbus, and though it is grown in other places, Jamaican allspice is considered the best. And allspice is an integral part of Jamaican Jerk (whether the spice is used, or the meat is actually smoked over pimento wood which is where the allspice fruit comes from).
